22 May, 2014
Anglo American Platinum (“the Company”) is saddened to confirm the death early this morning of one of its employees who was found stabbed at an informal settlement in Sondela near Rustenburg.
The Company cannot yet confirm the union to which the deceased employee was affiliated. An investigation to establish further details is under way.
Chris Griffith, Anglo American Platinum CEO, said "We express our sincerest sympathy and extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. We will continue to work closely with the South African Police Services to ensure that those responsible for this act will be brought to justice."
Anglo American Platinum strongly condemns all acts of intimidation and violence. While the Company recognises employees have the right to strike, it is also imperative that those employees who want to work should be allowed to do so without fear of violence and intimidation.
