Valterra Platinum Advances 2030 Emissions Target as Mooi Plaats Solar Projects Reaches Commercial Operation
18 March, 2026
Valterra Platinum welcomes the commercial operation of the 240 MW Mooi Plaats Solar PV project in South Africa’s Northern Cape. This forms part of Envusa’s Koruson 2 (K2) project, a joint venture between Anglo American and Electricité de France Renewables (EDFR) Power Solutions. The Mooi Plaats is expected to supply about 15% of Valterra Platinum’s electricity demand, mitigating an estimated 500 000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually and advancing the company’s 2030 emissions-reduction target.
Bringing the Mooi Plaats project online delivers significant benefits for Valterra Platinum, enhancing energy security, reducing exposure to tariff increases and accelerating progress towards the company’s climate commitments. With grid electricity currently accounting for about 87% of the company’s total emissions, the renewable supply will play a critical role in achieving Valterra Platinum’s Scope 1 and 2 targets of 30% absolute reduction by 2030.
Valterra Platinum CEO Craig Miller said: “The commercial operation of the Mooi Plaats project is a significant energy transition milestone for Valterra Platinum, securing cleaner, and reliable power for our operations. As all Envusa K2 projects come online, we will add approximately 480 MW of renewable energy to our operations, meeting about a third of our electricity needs. This strengthens our pathway to a 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 and demonstrates our commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices”.
Approximately 80% of electricity generated through the Koruson 2 programme is allocated to Valterra Platinum. Based on NERSA approved tariff structures and Valterra Platinum’s production profile, forecast savings from the programme are estimated at about 10% below current tariffs in 2026. Savings are subject to regulatory developments and changes in demand.
