Valterra Platinum released its Global Industry Standards on Tailings Management (GISTM) disclosure report, highlighting its marked improvement towards bringing its six tailings storage facilities into conformance with the standard.
The GISTM, sets a precedent for the safe management of tailings facilities and represents an important step forward for the mining industry to achieve strong social, environmental and technical outcomes. To ensure the safe management of its tailings facilities, Valterra Platinum committed its operations to assessments and disclosures in accordance with the GISTM.
These facilities are rigorously monitored through regular inspections, third-party audits, and stability assessments by an independent Engineer of Record. Valterra Platinum has also appointed a Technical Review Panel to perform additional reviews and oversight of its tailing’s storage facilities. In addition to robust structural integrity, Valterra Platinum prioritises emergency preparedness by actively engaging neighbouring communities through safety drills, accredited training, and clear evacuation protocols.
Valterra Platinum maintains full confidence in the integrity and safety of its tailings storage facilities, all of which are conforming with the GISTM.
Craig Miller, CEO of Valterra Platinum says, “The safety and integrity of our tailings facilities are non-negotiable, and we are working tirelessly to ensure these facilities consistently meet the highest global standards. Our collaborative approach, supported by local and district municipalities together with various emergency service departments and community leadership structures, ensure that both technical and community safeguards are in place. This reinforces the resilience and responsible management of our tailings storage facilities.”
